TMS Reading Group Information

The Thomas Merton Society Reading Group - join us - all are welcome!

The first session of the online Thomas Merton Society Reading Group was on 16 June 2022.

We come together on the third Thursday evening of alternate months for about 1 hour.

Over the past 12 months we have shared our thoughts on the following writings by Thomas Merton:

  • ‘The Power and Meaning of Love’ in Disputed Questions.

  • Correspondence between Thomas Merton & Rosemary Radford Ruether

  • ‘The Wild Places’

  • ‘Rain and the Rhinoceros’ in Raids on the Unspeakable

  • Journal entries from October 1964

  • Merton’s letters of 1967 & 1968 to Suzanne Butorovich, a sixteen year-old high-school student

We will all come together again for our next Zoom meeting on Thursday 20 February, 2025 at 7pm GMT when we will be looking at the article, ‘Then & Now: Thomas Merton and Cambridge’ by Susanne Jennings, which examines the current role of the college chaplain, and contrasts it with the pastoral care Merton might have received in his time. The article is to be found in the Advent 2024 edition of The Merton Journal.

If you would like to join the bi-monthly reading group please email tmsreadinggroup@thomasmertonsociety.org.uk

Those who sign up are provided with digital copies of the texts for discussion, on the basis that they are for study and personal use only.
